Tell me, how is your strategy doing?

The word strategy answers into question “How?” or into its longer counterpart “How to reach your vision and goal?”. This travel plan includes a lot of plans about routes, a lot of movement, waypoints, re-routings, and most of all: steps. Those who win, reach the goal first through a more economical route, than their competitors.

So, tell me how is your strategy doing? You can answer it by telling me how far you have traveled with your current strategy, your current location, your speed, and your outlook about the route ahead. But is this a valid question? Well, if you cannot tell where you are and what your speed and direction is, it’s quite hard to make any decision about what to do next.

But how to answer that question? The one who is questioning – in most cases the board of directors – wants an honest answer. Were you planning to ask something similar to the following answers: slowly, quickly, well, we’re halfway there, lagging or ahead?

Not a good idea, unless you possess facts and similar reckonings about how the strategy should be executed. But you know what they say, assumptions are the mother of all f*** ups. What if you are wandering away from the map, got lost, or stopped completely somewhere along the way?

The (more) right answer:

To get the correct information, you need to go to the ground level. To the people who are committed to your travel plan and are stepping it constantly observing and measuring the issues raised. The information you get there is reliable and unfiltered.

The more credible and right answer to “How is the strategy doing?” should be something like this:

  • From the 13 waypoints set before, one is going to fail and two is lagging badly – these two require immediate remedial decisions and actions.
  • According to our indicators, the journey towards the other 10 waypoints has proceeded all over 50%.
  • Of our planned 768 steps or actions, 421 are now complete. 65 are behind. According to feedback 31 of these are side-steps, that can now be removed from the plan.
  •  According to this review, my conclusion and recommendation are to….

Easy right? The right answer is always easy to give when the next basic functions of strategic leadership are in order:

  • The plan is made and delegated to the people responsible.
  • The executive units possess their own, more accurate plan, planned for their position.
  • Information is constantly gathered from ground level in an unfiltered and up-to-date manner.
  • The information is accessible and easily updatable in a precise and swift manner for the participants.
  •  The process is digitalized and manual labor is minimized to gathering and distributing the information.

When the view about how the strategy is doing and it is accessible in all the levels, all the time, the right answer is always there. Then you can focus your energy on the execution, leadership, guiding, and sparring.

The Vice President of Strategy

I guess it all starts from my childhood. In kindergarten I showed early on excellent capability for leadership in games, my toys were in order and I completed my colouring book with flying colours. After nailing my SATs with 1700 points, my ambitions were only briefly fulfilled, because isn’t the perfect score normally only 1600?

What COVID-19 taught to working life

2020 brought many unexpected new things to us. A song from Beatles states: “Come together” – and in 2020, for sure, the world was facing new challenges – together. The pandemic is an experience of generations. In ten years, people will most likely ask: where were you in May of 2020 when the world was shut down?
